OBITUARY
MRS. EDITH DUDER SAILING SHIP VOYAGES A link with the sailing-ship days of the last century has been severed by the death of Mrs. Edith Marianne Duder, of Devonport, widow of the late Captain Albert Duder, formerly harbourmaster of Auckland. Mrs. Duder, who was in her 80th year, was born in London and as a child was taken to India, where her father was employed as a civil engineer. After his death her mother married a sea captain named Grant, who took his stepdaughter for a voyage around the world in the ship Himalaya, a fine vessel of nearly 2000 tons. They called at many ports and spent some time in New Zealand waters. Two years later, when her education had - been completed. she sailed from England to Wellington with him in the 200-ton schooner Jasper. ' Mrs. Duder was married in Wellington and made a number of voyages with her husband in vessels which he commanded in the intercolonial trade. In 1894 Captain Duder left the sea to become deputy-harbourmaster in Auckland and in the following year ' was appointed harbourmaster, a position he held until his retirement in 1913. After bis death in 1936 Mrs. Duder went to England, in spite of her advanced years, to see a son. Mr. Nelson Duder, who was living there. She is survived by two sons and a daughter. There are eight grandchildren. MRS. H. RHODES [from our own correspondent] TE AWAMUTU. Tuesday The death has occurred of Mrs; Harry Rhodes, aged 70, of. Paterangi. Mrs. Rhodes was the eldest daughter of the Hon. John Fisher and Fisher, and was born at Pukerimu, being one of the first white children to be born in the district. She was secretary of the Presbyterian W'omen's Missionary Union for about 25 years and was * also an active supporter of the Women's Division of the Farmep' Union. Mrs. Rhodes is survived by Ire;* husband, one son and one daughter.
