WORK STOPS
HIGHWAY PAVING THE GOVERNMENT POLICY COMPLETION OF CONTRACTS Operations on the section of four and a-half miles of the Auckland-Helensvilie highway included in the reconstruction and sealing programme have been suspended, and, although no official statement has been made, it seems very likely that this portion of the road will not be paved in the coming summer as was originally intended. The action conforms with the tapering in road operations that is now the policy of the Public Works Department. Thero has been no suspension of operations, however, on the new traffic bridge just outside Helensville, which will remove one of the most dangerous level crossings in the district. The concrete bridge has been practically completed, and trains are running below on new alignments and lower grades than formerly. The approaches and the traffic bridge will be open in about two months' time. Reconstruction and paving work on the roads in the Auckland Public Works district appears to be confined to contracts let some time ago and under the supervision of county councils. Three undertakings are proceeding under the Franklin County Council. One is the reconstruction and sealing of about six miles of the PukekoheWaiuku highway. The same class of operations is being performed on the Papakura-Titi section of highway that passes tho Kingseat Hospital. Reconstruction and scaling" of the highway from Tuakau to the Waikato Piver is well in hand. It is expected that all these contracts will be completed this summer. In the Waipa County, six or seven miles of the 20 miles highway between Te Awamutu and Cambridge are being reconstructed and sealed, and this work should be finished in the coining summer. There is a similar scheme that will be completed this summer on the East Coast highway to the north in the Waitemata County.
