CRICKET CONTROL
CITY AND SUBURBAN SUCCESSFUL PAST SEASON HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY A strong appeal to enthusiasts to carry on with competitions during: the summer months, in spite of the serious war situation, was made by Mr. J. Elliott, president of the Auckland City and Suburban Cricket Association, at its annual meeting last evening. Mr. Elliott said it was unwise for players to sit on the bank and not take part in. a healthy recreation. Tho annual report stated that a high standard of play was maintained during the past season, particularly in tho senior grade. It was obvious, however, toward the end < of the vear that clubs were disorganised owing to tho outbreak of war, and some teams had withdrawn from the competitions. It was also regretted that-1030-40 was the wettest playing season experienced for many years. Congratulations were extended to the Manukau club on winning both the senior A and B grade competitions. Reference was made to centuries scored during the season by tho following senior players:—l. Webster (2), R. Longville and F. Wood. ... A satisfactory position was revealed by the balance-sheet. Receipts for the year totalled £398 Is lOd, and expenditure amounted to £284 3d. leaving a credit balance of £ll3 17s 7d. Tho commitments were heavier, owing to the cancellation- of many matches through wet weather. Tho following donations were made: —St. John Ambulan.ce, £5 ss; Y.M.C.A., £5 ssj Sick and Wounded Fund appeal, £ls los. Reference was made to the payment of £386 11«? 3d in wicket fees to local municipal bodies. Mr. Elliott said tho financial position reflected great credit on the management of tho game Inst season. , rrr » Presentations were made to Mr. W. A. Cowan, who retired from tho position of anditor. and to the following players:—H. Longville, J. Abbott. W. Robertshaw. W. Hetherington. Discussing the prospects for the season, Mr. Elliott said the management committee was fully alive to the situation. In order to secure an estimate of the playing strength it was decided to call for nominations for all grades on October 21. The newly-olected committee will then arrange the season s. programme. In the meantime, said the president, the clubs would assist by keeping up the strength of the association. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis; president, Mr. J. Elliott; vice-presidents. Messrs. W. J. Proud, R. G. Hook, H. J. Rolliher, A. J. Gaily. J. Campbell, W. A. Cowan, F. A. Cooper.
