HOCKEY TOURNEY

LADIES' CARNIVAL ANNUAL DOMINION EVENT FINAL SECTION RESULTS Heavy rain overnight and during the morning, with intermittent showers throughout the day, made playing conditions in the fifth round of the New Zealand women's hockey championship, tournament at Melville Park yesterday very difficult. This was the final round of section play. In A section "Wellington, by virtue of its two-goal victory over the Ash burton team, is undisputed winner. Two teams, Canterbury and Auckland A, are at the top of B section, and will meet in a play-off this afternoon at three o'clock. Following is a table showing tho positions of the teams at the conclusion of the section play:— SECTION A , Goals Ch. P. W. L. D. F. A. Pts. Wellington .. 4 3 1 10 3 7 Auckland 8.41 Ashburton ..4 22 8 -7 4 Marlborough .4 1 2 1 3 2 • i? Akitio .. 4 SECTION B Canterbury ..4 3 Auckland A . 4 . 3 1 10 4 7 Wanganui 4 1 3 Rangitikei 4 1 3 Wairarapa 4 1 3 Auckland B had its third draw when it divided tho points in an oven match with Marlborough. In winning A section Wellington proved a little too strong for Ashburton. Wanganui was no match for last year's winner, Canterbury, in a high-scoring contest. In the fourth match Auckland A won by two goals from Wairarapa. Results of yesterday's games are as follows : A Section.—Wellington, 3, Ashburton, 1: Auckland B, 1, Marlborough, 1; Akitio, a bye. B Section.—Canterbury, 7, Wanganui. 0; Auckland A, 3, Wairarapa, 1; Rangitikei, a bye. Details of the play are:— SECTION A MATCHES Auckland B v. Marlborough.—Largo pools of water on the field militated ag.iinst constructive play by either team. Tho players, however, conquered the conditions, and a fast game resulted. Auckland had a largo share of tho offensive in the first spell and wont close to scoring, but tho Marlborough dcfenco was equal to tho occasion, and at half-time there was no score. Miss O'Sullivan, the custodian, gave a bright display of accurate clearing from a rain-sodden goalmouth. Tho highlight of tho match camo in the second spell, when tho scores were even. Miss Lowe, centre-forward for Auckland, had a runaway from almost half-way and, eluding tho goalkeeper, sent in a powerful drivo. However, Marlborough's right fullback, Miss Martin, camo in to clear with a flying shot when the ball was only a few foot from the net. Miss Elliott played a superb game at right half for Auckland, her stickwork, even under the existing conditions, being faultless. At inßlde-left in the first half and later centre-forward, Miss Lowe gave a fine exhibition of sound stickwork and positional play. Marlborough's strongest section vas tho defence. Miss O'Sullivan, in goal, played her uimal sound game, and the fullbacks, Misses Martin and Williams, cleared effectively. For Marlborough Miss Botham scored and Miss Spiers netted for Auckland B. Mesdames Simpson and Twiname wore umpires. Wellington v. Ashburton.— Wellington had the extra cohesion needed to defeat tho young Ashburton team. There were even exchanges in the opening stages. Wellington's vanguard worked well as a unit and was well fed by the halfbacks. At half-time the score was:— Wellington, 1; Ashburton, 0. The winning team's attacks were almost all flank movements. In this connection the wingers, _ Mrs. Lamason and Miss Riley, wero prominent, both displaying speed and excellent stickwork. An efficient combination was that of Mrs. Lamason and Mrs. Sundgren, insideright, who wero responsible for some particularly bright inter-passing. Wellington's defence was not tested very much, but it was always reliable. Sound defence was offered by Ashburton. In goal, Miss B. Brown had a difficult day, but proved reliable. For Wellington Mesdames Lamason and_ Sundgren and Miss Yeatman scored, while Miss M. Donaldson netted for Ashburton. Mrs. Hamlin and Mr. Maloney were umpires. SECTION, B MATCHES Auckland A v. Wairarapa.—The fine understanding among the clever Auckland forwards upset the Wairarapa defences. The Auckland insides, Misses McCufcheon, Spring and Alison, making full use of tho accurate centring of their wings, wore always dangerous. Tho Wairarapa fullbacks. Misses Wara and Wilson, played well under pressure, but were not always successful in turning tho attack. One goal down at tho beginning of the second half, Wairarapa made sterling efforts to equalise. Tho Auckland left inside, Miss McCutcheon, rallied her team with another goal, and from then on the homo forwards took complete charge. On the left wing for Wairarapa Miss 0. Mills showed considerable speed and initiative on attack. For Auckland Miss McCutcheon scqred three times, while Miss Mills was responsible for Wnirarapa's goal. Mrs. Corringham and Mr. Scott were umpires. Wanganui v, Canterbury.—Once again Canterbury's strong forward line played havoc with-an opposing defence. Admirably fed by Miss T. Cross, tho Canterbury inside forwards, Misses Archer, Dickey and McNabb, seized every opportunity to invade their opponents' circle. With the half-time score at 3—o in Canterbury's favour Wanganui made strenuous efforts to lessen its .deficit. Mrs. Coneybcer. at centre-forward, played very well, hut lack of support nullified her aggressiveness. Assmnimr the offensive once'more the Canterbury forwards kept the defence continually on its toes. In iroul for Wantranui Miss Spicer gavo an outstanding exhibition and .the score does* not do justice to her efforts. Miss T. Cross showed considerable speed when called upon, and her stickwork was outstanding. For the winners goals were scored by Misses Archer (2), McNabb (2) pnd Dickey (3). The game was controlled by Misses Dawson and Taylor.
