NORTHLAND SQUADRONS ORGANISATION COMMENCED [IIY TELKG KA I'll —OWN' CO It It ESJ'ON I) F.N T ] "WHANG Ali EI, Friday The initial organisation for the formation of two squadrons of mounted rifles has commenced in Northland. This morning Colonel 11. J. White and Captain G. F. Yerex, New Zealand Staff Corps, Army Headquarters, Wellington, met senior officers in this district to discuss the formation of these squadrons. The two staff officers arc to visit various centres _in tho North and South Islands. They will bo five days in Northland.

The squadrons will provide a Jink between tho harbour . defences, which are under tho control of the National Military Reserve. Their scope of operations will cover the cast coast, extending inland for from 10 to 15 miles, according to the nature of the country. Captain Yerex stated that a number of officers and men who saw service in tlio fast war -with tho mounted troops had already offered their services. The troops would operate largely as mobile coastguards, each section being allocated a section of tho rough coastal country. Captain Yerex was confident that tho necessary men would come forward and that farmers who had riding horses, although they were not themselves available for service, would offer the use of tho horses. A number of pack horses in addition to backs would also be required.

The amount involved was estimated at £ISOO. The ouestion of making a donation to the British mercantile marine was discussed at the annual meeting of the Bruntwood Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited. Tlie directors wore asked to consider the matter, the amount suggested being 100 guineas.

Friday Two motions that financial support be given Now Zealand's war effort Avere defeated at the annual meeting of tho Maungatapcre Dairy Company. It was first proposed that the share dividend, amounting to £3ll, be donated to tho Auckland Provincial Patriotic Fund, instead of being distributed to shareholders. This was defeated by a five to one majority. It was later moved that a deduction of id per lb. butterl'at bo made during tho coming season, and that this amount bo donated to further New Zealand's war elfort. This motion did not find a seconder. In tho discussion it was pointed out that individuals in tho Maungatapcre district had already subscribed to patriotic funds. PATRIOTIC DONATION INDIANS GIVE DAY'S INCOME All Indians residing in Taumarunui district, including fruiterers, farmers and farm hands, have donated a day's income to the Red Cross and Patriotic Fund, their total contribution being £22. The Indian Association of New Zealand, it is understood, is organising similar contributions among branch associations.

At Pukekoho the Indian community raised £79 10#.
