LONDON BUDGET REACTION TONE GENERALLY CHEERFUL LONDON, July 24 The Stock Exchange so far has shown little response to the Budget, but the tone generally is cheerful. British funds have recorded little alteration, and industrials are quiet. NEWTON KING YEAR NO DIVIDENDS PAYABLE The accounts of Newton King, Limited, merchants and stock agents, New Plymouth, show a net trading profit of £25,571 for the year ended April 30, against £20,206 in the previous year. Of this, £16,010 is transferred to taxation reserve, making the total £22,249. The appropriation in the previous year was £9500. The net result, therefore, is £9561, against £10,706 in 1938-39. With £28,267 brought in, there is £37,828 available. No dividends are recommended. Preference dividends are ten years in arrears, the amount owing being £95,217. The sum of £6750 was provided for depreciation, against £8736 a year ago. - • The balancing total is £81,204 lower at £578,999. The amount owing to the bank has been reduced from £260,212 to £152/290. Creditors are £6145 higher at £100,028, -while debtors are down by £79,622 to £340,898. Stocks, plant and properties are all slightly higher. SOUTH AFRICAN WOOL RESULTS IN OPEN MARKET LONDON, July 24 South African wool statistics for the year ended June 30 show that 793,415 hales were offered and 500,111 bales were sold by auction. Total dispersals were 768.129 bales. The average export value was per lb., the.average value in June being the same. Although the New Zealand and Australian clips were subject to the British Governmeut purchase scheme, South Africa remained on the open market throughout last season. Toward the end of the season it was estimated that the average return in South Africa was 10 per cent higher than the British contract price in Australia. Since then, however, growers in the Commonwealth have received the 10 per cent retention money and an equalisation payment bf 8i- per cent. Doubts have been expressed as to the manner in which South African sheepowners would fare next season in an open market, with Continental demand largely eliminated. - EXPORT OF POTATOES f SHIPMENT TO AUSTRALIA (Received .July 25, 8.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 25 It is expected that the first shipment of New Zealand potatoes, consisting of 1000 tons, will arrive next week. Tasmanian potatoes are selling at £l2 a ton and others at £ll. The wheat market is slow at unchanged levels. Prices are:—Silo grain, 4s a bushel; bagged, 4s Flour, £l2 10s a ton.
