INCREASE IN DOMINION FEWER PASSENGERS CARRIED [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Thursday An increase in the amount of freight carried by the New Zealand civil aviation services, and decreases in passengers and mails, compared with tho previous jear, are recorded in the annual report of the Department of Industries and Commerce up to March 31, 1940, presented in the House of Representatives. Passengers carried during the year totalled .51,802, as against 53,039 in 1939, a decrease of 1237. The freight carried amounted to 223,0181b., as against 166,2781b., and the mails to 234,9891b., compared with 316,3801b. • "Following the outbreak of the war some of the regular services were abandoned," the report says. "These , included those between Christchurch and Palmerston North, Palmerston North and Gisborne, and Gisborne and Auckland."
