AUCKLAND STREETS ALTERATIONS APPROVED PUBLIC MEN' COMMEMORATED Prominent .public men, important war localities and historical Maori figures have been commemorated in new street names, which the Auckland City Council approved at a meeting yesterday afternoon. The names are subject to further approval by the chief postmaster.

Among alterations in street name* which a sub-committee recomi wero the following:—Lock Street, Remuera, to Loch Street; Cheeseman Street, Ponsonby, to Cameron Street; Von Tempsky Street, Parnell, to Corunna Avenue; Volkner Avenue, Remuera, to St. Vincent Avenue; John Gully Street, Ponsonby, to Margaret Street. Alterations in the case of streets on the - western reclamation were proposed as follows: —Allenwood Street, formerly Allenby Street, to Narvik Street; Hood Street, formerly Halsey Street, to Dunkirk Street; Drummond Street, formerly Jellicoe Street, to Edgar Kain Street. It was also recommended that the name of Tooley Street be given to the new street on the eastern reclamation adjacent to the former Haig Street, now closed. Names for newly-formed streets were proposed as follows: —Bonnie 'Brae Road, off Meadowbank Road; Sayegh Street, off Towai Street; Iliston Street, off Dignan Road; De Luen Street, off Moa Road extension; Kettle Street, off Premier Avenue; Savage Street, off Old Mill Road; Notley Street, off Garnet Road; Dempsey Street, off Benson Road; Logan Campbell Street, off Great North Road; Freyberg Street, connecting to Oakley Avenue; Parry, Herdman and Casement Aickin Streets, all in Oakley Park Estate; Phelan Street, off Garnet Road; Westwood Terrace, off Shelly Beach Road. In the case of Block I) at Orakei, the sub-committee gave effect to a suggestion by the chief librarian, Mr. J. Barr, and selected a group of names associated with the discovery and settlement of New Zealand by the Maoris. The names selected wer-e as follows: —Kupe, Ngaka, Takitumu, Aotea, Te Arawa, Matatua, Kurahaupo, Tokomaru, Rukutai, Hawaiki.
