RACING IN AUCKLAND HOPE GIBBONS SHIELD SECOND OF SERIES DECIDED The second race of the series in the Hope Gibbons Shield competition was decided by the Auckland centre of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association on Saturday. A strong westorly wind slowed the riders, particularly on tho outward journey. A course of 25 miles, extending from Point Chevalier to tho Hobsonvillo turn-off and return, was used. On tho hard rido out to the turn the three teams were fairly even, Manukau wero fastest in 35m 40s, but only 5s better than Lynndale. Tho Northern riders turned together in 30m 255. With tho assistance of the wind the return journey was done in 31 ill 10s by Manukau, 31m 34s by Northern, and in 31m 41s by Lynndulo. Following were tho placings:— Manukau (M. C. Johnson, V. D. PROFESSIONAL CONTESTS Auckland. —The seventh annual raco for the Cleaver Memorial Cup was held at Sylvia Park and resulted in a dead-heat between S. Wcller and R. Absoluin after one of tho best finishes seen during competition for this coveted trophy. The placings were:—S. Weller (4m), 50m 555, and It. Absoluin (Om 15s), 50m 30s, dead-heat, 1; T. EVENTS IN THE COUNTRY Matamata. —The Matamata Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held its tenth road race of the season on Saturday over a course of 43 miles to Morrinsvillo and back. Results were:—S.
