BOROUGH COUNCIL STAFF ASSURANCE AT WHANGAREI [FBOII OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] "WHANGAKEI, "Wednesday That not one alien was employed by the Borough Council was an assurance given by the Mayor, Mr. W. Jojkis, at a meeting of the Whangarei Borough. Council, when a letter was read from the local Returned Soldiers' Association, objecting to the employment* of aliens while returned soldiers were not provided with work.. Mr. Jones continued by saying that reference had been 1 inade to two Dalmatians, now naturalised British subjects, who had fpught against" Britain in the last war."''These men had been born on islands in the Adriatic and had been forced to fight for Austria. Referring to another statement made arc the meeting of returned soldiers. Mr. Jones said that it was the first occasion on which he had heard a Scot spoken of as an alien in a British countrv. Surprise was expressed by members that the association had sponsored such a resolution, without first making full inquiries.
