NEW NAVAL LIFEBELT
DESIGN FROM AUSTRALIA [prom our own correspondent] SYDNEY. May 8 An Australian-designed lifebelt has been „ adopted by the Admiralty for issue to all sea-going personnel of the Royal Navy and lias been supplied to every man in the Royal Australian Navy. Australian manufacturers have already filled orders for 20,000 of the lifebelts for the Admiralty for issue to the China and East Indies squadrons of the Royal Navy and 10,000 lifebelts for the Royal Australian Navy. New Zealand is manufacturing the lifebelt from samples supplied by the Royal Australian Navy. Samples and full details have been sent by air to the Admiralty so that supplies for tho Royal Navy can bo manufactured in Britain. Designed in the Navy Office, Melbourne, the new belt has been devised so that it can be fixed firmly to tho wearer's chest in a way that will ensure his head being kept abovo water. Made of indiarubber, the belt is rapidly inflated by blowing into a small tube. When deflated it is not cumbersome or inconvenient to wear ; and, being covered with a woollen jacket, serves as protection against cold. It may bo worn as a garment and inflated at the last moment before entering the water or when in the water. The new belt is produced for only about one shilling each pore jthan the old type of waist tubo. :
