CITY INTERSECTIONS PLANS FOR INSTALLATION READY BY END OF YEAR Investigations regarding the installation of traffic lights in Auckland were made in Australia by Mr. W. It. 1' ce, a member of the Auckland City Council, who returned by the Monterey yesterday. Mr. Fee added that the installation of 10 lights at the most important intersections in the city should lie well under way by the end of this year. Specifications for 10 traffic -signals, which have been approved by the City Council, were submitted by Mr. Fee to the manufacturers in Melbourne. It was stated that there were no obstacles to their manufacture) and the present time was particularly advantageous. Arrangements were made for an immediate investigation by the company and quotations will be forwarded later, so that within two or three months the scheme should be ready for final approval by the City Council. The only point outstanding was the matter of obtaining an import licence. No difficulty is anticipated in this direction in view of the importance of the installation of the lights and the strong support given by the Commissioner of Transport to the scheme. Since his last visit to Australia about 12 months ago, Mr. Fee stated, the same system of traffic lights had been installed in Newcastle. "While in Melbourne, Mr. Fee saw the signals in operation in the most congested areas, and he said that he was more convinced than ever that traffic lights were the only solution to the traffic problems in Auckland, particularly in relation to pedestrians. Both in Sydney and Melbourne the lights were obeyed implicitly by pedestrians, and they' wero giving great satisfaction.
