FINES TO BE INCREASED "I shall start to gradually increase the penalties to put a stoj) to those practices," declared Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Otaliuhu, yesterday, when dealing with charges of drinking in" the vicinity of dance halls. Colin Dickey was charged with drinking near a hall and Raymond Richardson was charged with being found in possession of liquor in the vicinity of a hall. Both pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Daly said Dickey was found drinking in a parked car which Richardson admitted was his. Three large bottles of beer were found in the car. The offences had been committed at Manurewa. Mr. McKean said the penalties previously imposed had apparently not acted as a deterrent. It was necessary to stop the practice. Tho previous penalty had been 20s and costs and he would increase the fines in tho present cases to £2 and costs.
