SAVING OF' METAL URGED PROPOSAL NOT ECONOMIC [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN COttUKSPONDBST] GISBORNE, Monday Interest has been taken by the Government in a decision of the Gisborne Harbour Board to sink the hull of the dredge Korua, which has been stripped of all items likely to be valuable. The secretary of supply lias pointed out the potential demand for all metals in existing circumstances and has asked the board to refrain from taking any action without advising the Government. The secretary-manager, Mr. H. A. Barton, reported to a meeting of the board to-day that he had replied explaining the prohibitive cost of further breaking up the dredge Korua. The condition of parts of the underwater portion was probably unsafe and there was no power available to handle heavy lifts. . , _ "There is no suitable place to beach the vessel," added Mr. Barton. "The board is not prepared to take the risk of holding the hull in the harbour oyer the winter. Arrangements are being made to tow the dredge to Young Nick's Head for sinking."
