THE PANAMA CANAL Few great enterprises hare caused so much disappointment and bankruptcy a;s the construction of the Panama Canal, which, although it was no new scheme 50 years ago, was only completed in 1914 after the project had been taken over by the United States. The following is taken from the New Zealand Herald of April 2, 1890: "The French have for years been talking as if they would virtually control the Pacific when the Panama Canal was completed, but it is becoming very doubtful if M. de Lesseps' great enterprise will ever be finished. The French engineers sent out to report on the canal works are now returning, Una it ili believed they have been very unfavourably impressed. One of them has remarked:—'The Panama Canal is but a, bad dream. So much money has been wasted that I do not think that tha enterprise will ever be revived.' Another l:,as said: —'If the canal be proceeded, with I am to be engaged in the work; but I do not think I will ever see the isthmus again. People have not confidence enough to give the vast amount cf money required to finish the work.
