DOMINION'S ARMY ENLISTMENTS IN NORTH TOTAL OF 53 IN WEEK to , . [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Saturday During the pji.st week 53 enlistments liave been received in the North Auckland military area, 30 Europeans and 23 Maoris. This brings the total enlistments in the area to 2372, 1586 Europeans and 786 Maoris. Of the European total, 1137 have been classed as fit, 112 temporarily unfit and 119 permanently unfit. Reserved occupations have accounted for 96 fit men, while 83 enlistments of fit mon have been withdrawn. So far, 728 men have been despatched to camp and 230 fit men are available, while 218 have yet to so before medical boards. A total of 389 Maoris has been passed as fit, 102 temporarily unfit and 67 permanently unfit. Thirty-eight fit men are in reserved occupations, and 40 enlistments have been withdrawn. Already 270 men have been sent to camp, and 41 fit. men are available, while 228 have yet to go before a medical board. DETERMINATION TO SERVE RECItUIT UNDERGOES OPERATION [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORKESPONDKNT] WHANGAREI, Saturday Great determination to take his place in the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force has been shown by Jack Shipman, aged 22, of Onerahi, Whangarei. Shipman, who is of splendid physique, enlisted before Christmas and was told that he could not ho accepted for service overseas unless ho underwent an abdominal operation, the need for which was detected by the medical board. The operation was by no means urgent, but Shipman determined to waste no time, and made arrangements to go into hospital. The operation was performed six weeks ago and Shipman is now convalescing at home. He will be ready for camp shortly, and hopes to get away with the third echelon.
