CONTROL OF TRAFFIC

PROPOSALS AT CAMBRIDGE [from our own correspondent] CAMBRIDGE, Friday A scheme for the automatic control of traffic in the business area of Cambridge was presented to last night's meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council by the engineer, Mr. W. MeK. Jeffrey. The building of a circular traffic island at the intersection of five streets in the centre of the town, and of two safety zones in Victoria Street, and the installation of special reflectors on pedestrian crossings were the main points of the scheme. The Mayor, Mr. Edgar .Tames, stated that he favoured the scheme, particularly the traffic zones and pedestrian crossings. Ho considered that the difficulty of the circular island was that the intersection was not square. The main object of the scheme in slowing traffic was: very desirable. I t was decided to approve the scheme, with the exception of the circular island and to pass the plan on to the Main Highways Board to ascertain what financial assistance would be forthcoming.
