CHINESE STRIKE
OVERSEAS SHIP'S CBEW HIGHER PAY DEMANDED DEADLOCK AT WANGANUI [BY TBI.KGBiVPII —OWN CORRKSPONHENT] WASGAN'OI, Friday No move toward a settlement of a strike of Chinese seamen in an overseas vessel delayed in port at Wanganui after unloading phosphate yesterday has been made by the strikers. A representative of the owners stated to-niglit that higher pay and better conditions are sought by -18 men, who contend that the rate of pay specified in the agreement they subscribed to when employed in Chinese waters is far too low to meet the standard of living in New Zealand. The men are demanding; something more in keeping with wages outside Hongkong, where they were engaged, but the owners, through their representative in Wanganui, state that the men signed an agreement for two years and it is reasonable to expect that they should abide by that. Members of the crew have been going and coming'at will, while a police patrol has been maintained on the wharf, but nothing unusual, has happened.
