FIFTY YEARS AGO
REPORTED GOLD DISCOVERY News of the discovery of gold near Whangarei 50 years ago nearly caused a gold rush, but hopes were later dashed by the announcement that an had been made in the analysis of specimens. The following is an extract from the New Zealand Herald of March 15, 1890: — 1 " The reported discovery of rich gold at Kaitara, Whangarei, created considerable excitement in town yesterday, but the telegram from our Thames correspondent stating that the analysis had not been made at the Thames School of Mines, as previously stated, made people sceptical about the value of the discovery. Subsequently it was explained that the analysis was made at Coromandel. Hopes were somewhat revived by this news, only to be dashed again when some of the 'quartz' was exhibited. They are pieces of brown flint stone. Not a speck of gold is visible. The mystery is explained by a telegram which states that the crucibles used in the test were mixed, thus causing the error."
