RISKED OWN LIFE
FLYING ADVENTURE GALLANT CIVIL ENGINEER SAVES FELLOW PASSENGER (Received March *lO. 7.l'J p.m.) British Wireless LONDON. March The British Empire medal for gallantry has been awarded to Mr. Harold Charrington, who was a passenger in an aeroplane out of control ami risked his life to assist a fellow passenger to jump to safety. Mr. Charrington is a civil engineer attached to the Air Ministry. With a colleague he was flying in Palestine in bad weather conditions when the pilot, finding that the machine!, at 'a height of about 7500 ft., was going into an uncontrollable spin, gave the order to jump. Mr. Charrington's colleague was not able to get away as the air pressure prevented him from climbing over the side of the cockpit. Regardless of his own safety, Mr. Charrington stayed and helped him get clear. When, later, Mr. Charrington, with great difficulty, himself jumped, the machine was so close to the ground that a few seconds more delay would have been fatal. He actually reached the ground almost immediately after his parachute opened.
