NEWMAEEET CARNIVAL INTER-PROVINCIAL EVENTS HANAN DEFEATS HATCHWELL Fully 3000 spectators, the largest, number to attend a swimming carnival in Auckland for gome years, were present at the inter-provincial carnival held in the Newmarket Olympic Pool last night by tho Newmarket Amateur Swimming Club and the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. The chief attraction was the appearance of several southern champions in invitation scratch races against Auckland cjinmF lions. The visitors were highly successjil, three of them, C. Cliff, of Canterbury, Miss S. Gotlieb, of Wellington, and INliss J. Macdonald, of Southland, gaining wins. The only Aucklander to bo victorious was P. Hanan, who was first in the 100 metres men's freestyle contest. Performances' generally were good, although all swimmers were plainly hampered by the slowing effect of tho fiO-nietre laps and the fresh water.
