INCOME TAX DEMANDS
ISSUE OF THE NOTICES
HEAVIEST LEW EVER MADE Demands for the payment of income tax for the year ended on March 31, 1939, were received by many taxpayers in Auckland yesterday, and will continue to come forward for a week or so. The Commissioner of Taxes has fulfilled his promise to post demands from January 5. The demands include the 15 per cent increase in taxation imposed by legislation several months ago and which was not. embodied in the figures when the assessments tlhat precede demand notices were issued. The issue of demand notices will be the largest in New Zealand's history, for legislation and increased wages have combined to swell the number of taxpayers. The levy will also bo by far the heaviest ever made on the community. The receipt recently of assessments indicated to taxpayers that they were generally expected to contribute increased sums to the Consolidated Fund, but some who then neglected to add 15 per cent to the total now realise just what this represents by way of added contribution.
