"FORBIDDEN" LIST
Much of Hollywood's "forbidden" list has not been written by the censors, but, though self-imposed, the additional items are just as rigidly adhered to as any of the arbiters' decrees. The most recent example is furnished by "Emergency Squad." It was originally intended to title it "Suicide Squad," which, it was commonly agreed among the production staff, had a lot more "oomph," but that was checked off the list without much argument. For a long time "Death" was just as bad, but after "Death Takes a Holiday," some of the stigma seemed to be removed, and now the words, "murder," "massacre" and a score of similar terms are used. But not "suicide." Nobody can explain why the public won't accept it, beyond vouchsafing that it's "all in the mind."
