Soft Tyres Affect Petrol Consumption

A test to indicate how tyre pressures affect petrol consumption was recently conducted in England. It proved that the deflation of the tyres increased the consumption of petrol by nearly 10 per cent.

A 10 horse-power car was used, travelling in top gear at an average speed of 27 miles an hour. The recommended tyre pressures were 261b. per square inch in front and .'lolb. in the back tyres.

For the tost an all-round pressure of 281b. was adopted. Petrol consumption in one direction was <14.? miles to the gallon, and in the other, with favourable wind and gradient, 50 miles. Tyre pressures were then lowered to 171b., with the result "that the petrol figures fell to 40 and 40 miles to the gallou respectively.
