RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS
SUSPENSION DURING WAR EXCEPTION IN SPECIAL CASES [BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Thursday An outline of the regulations approved by the Rhodes trustees regard- ' ing the tenure of scholarships for the duration of the war was received at a meeting of the Rhodes Scholarships Selections Committee. The trustees agreed that although elections may be . held in 1939 for the academic year 1940-4} ' the scholarships shall after the election be suspended until after the war. Nevertheless/ in special cases scholar-elect will be allowed to make application to proceedsfco Oxford without delay. Where the student is taking ordinary academic work in non-scienti-fie subjects permission is unlikely to be given. In the case of a medical student or scholar interested in scientific research likely to be of national value, approval is possible. . Permission will be granted only m most exceptional cases where the scholar «•% is from a country in which conscription or compulsory training is introduced. In a case where the scholar is for a special personal reason disqualified tor war service the trustees will consider the application. _ . The trustees hope when peace is restored to revive all suspended scholarships, but they do not wish definitely to bind themselves to do so until tne time has arrived. The trustees further reserve the right to cancel or suspend a scholarship, In spite of the usual rule , that the scholar-elect may not marry r before taking up his scholarship the trustees will not insist-that marring automatically involves the forfeiture ot the scholarship, but will be prepared to consider application in regard to special cases. ■'
