ELLERSLIE WORK

IVY WILLONYX PLEASES PHALERON. GALLOPS SMARTLY SILVER QUEX. BEATS WAITARMA Features of the final gallops at Ellerslio yesterday were the defeat of Royal Appellant over a round by the Alison Cup light-weight, Ivy Willonyx, and good sprinting by Phaleron and Biddy Girl over four and five furlongs respectively. Fast work was done on the course, with the poles out 40ft., and, as a result of the rain which fell practically throughout the morning, the going was a trifle dead. On the course proper. Silver Qnex (Gilchrist) drew away from Waitarma (Pell) over the concluding: stages of five furlongs, and beat her easily in 1.0 1-5. After running the first furlong in 12s, Bronze Fire (Ileum) got to the end of half a mile in 51 2-ss. As he appeared to be loafing at the finish, it \yas a good effort on the part of Bronze 1" ire, who may bo capable of a surpriso in the Melrose Maiden Handicap tomorrow. Treyace (Gilchrist) was ridden out to beat British Talent (Wiggins) over five furlongs in 1.0, the first being run in 13 l-ss. British Talent was the more impressive, as he appeared to have a good deal in reserve at the end. Royal Son (Kerr) proved too good for Bide-a-Wee (Gemmell) over half a nule in 5U 3-ss. Bright Idea (Vaughan) strode over a mile in 1.49 4-5, the last half in 50 2-ss. Tliero was little between Prudent (Atkins) and Calula Boy (Gilchrist) at the finish of three furlongs in 38 4-ss. Beeswing (Kerr) pleased by tho style in which she covered six furlongs in 1.19 4-5. Pern and Silver Stick After running the first half in 51s, Pern (Atkins) and Silver Stick (Farrell)' were easing up over the concluding stages of a mile in 1.47 2-5. Both did their work well. Phaleron (Wigcrins) sprinted half a mile in 51s. Although it was the best of the morning for the distance, Phaleron appeared to be moving a trifle short. Mintlaw (Forsyth) strode over half a mile in 55 3-ss. Although he will be making his first appearance in open, company, Mintlaw may put up a good showing in the Cheltenham Handicap, as ho has never been better. Every Port (Gilchrist) finished several lengths in front of Gay Broney (Speck) at tho conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5, the last half-mile in 50 l-ss. Every Port is working in improved style, and appears to stay fairly well. Bamhury Cross (Forsyth) and Volifox (Vaughan) finished together at the end of three furlongs in 395. Considering he has not done much serious work, Bambury Cross shaped very promisingly. Tane Pango (Cameron) heat Red Warden : (Gemmell) by two lengths over half a mil' l in 53 4-ss, the first furlong taking 12 4-ss. Merry Vaals "(Pell) shaded Royal Message (Wigsrins) at the end of fivo furlongs in 1.7, the last three being run in 41 2-ss. Merry Vaals shaped well for a novice., but Royal Message looked as if she could have done a good deal better and appears to have bright prospects in the Ponui Handicap to-morrow. Paint (Dowrick) was not ridden out to complete three furlongs in. 395. Hinehou (Coon) showed plenty of dash while running the same distance in 40 2-ss. The Alison Cup candidates. Royal Appellant. (Vnughan) and Ivy Willonyx (Green), were associated over a round in 2.8, Royal Huntress (Bruce) assisting over the last, six furlongs, which were run in 1.24 2-5. Ivy Willonyx finished two lengths in front of Roval Huntress, with Royal Appellant a length further back. Ivy Willonyx was stay--lng on splendidly and gained friends for her engagement Ho-morrow. Royal Appellant had his tongue over the bit, which may have been the cause of his weakening over the concluding 'stages. "'Biddy Girl Beats Pasture There 'was little between Ringshot (R. Fearn) and Boy Lu (Dowrick) at the end of half a utile in 51 4-ss. Melvanui (Coon) ran the last three furlongs of his work in 41 1-ss. Biddy Girl (Vaughan) beat, Pasture (Murrav) by two lengths over five furlonsrs in 1.4 2-5, the first two being run in 25 2-ss. It was the best of the morning for the distance" and, although she had nothing in reserve. Biddv Girl would only need to produce this efTort to be prominent in the Melrose Maiden Handicap. Pasture did not go as well as usual, but she. may have been affected by the going:.-; Spinning Wheel (Murray) finished too well for Cintrace (Vaughan) and Whenua (Rvan) over seven furlongs and beat them easily in 1.33. the last, three occupying 425. It was a solid performance on the part of Spinning AVhcel. who received the worst oi' the start ,and it appears as.if she has regained form. After running the first three in 38 1 -ss, Miss Appellant (Gilchrist) completed sir furlongs in 1.20 3-5. Assisted by Beverley (Messervy) over the last half-mile in 54 3-ss, Summary (Murray) got to the end of seven furlongs in 1.34 3-5. They finished practically together, but Beverley was going comfortably. Tea Gong (McGiath) covered an easy seven furlongs, the last, three taking 42 4-ss. Happicoat (Messervy) was not extended to run half a mile in 545. Over the same ground, Loyal Grant (Gemmell) recorded 54 2-ss, but she was stopping at the end. Nightbeam "Under Restraint Tea Chat (Day) traversed a round in 2.14 -1-5. but he was tiring badly at the finish. Nitrhtbeam (Wiggins) was held back to Night Pilot (ChaHinder) over half a mile in 53 3-ss, the first furlong being run in 13 4.5s Sehrof (Messervy) worked smoothly over five furlongs in 1 0. lie appears to have taken no harm from his racing, and is bearing a very solid appearance. After runnintr the first furlong in 13s. Maipro (Vaughan) displayed speed while getting to the end of half. a mile in 51 2-ss, athouerh he had nothing in reserve. True Bill (McGrath) went freely over five furlongs in l.fi 3-5. Maori Star cqemmell) sprinted two furlonzs down the straight. _ On the tan, Knight of Australia (Hearn) completed the last six furlonsrs of a round in 1 "0. Roval Abb (Markwick) ran a round in 1.52 4-5, th- last six furlongs in 1.2-' 4-5 and the half-mile in 55 4-os. Royal Abb worked rcaliv well and would have done better only for his rider losing an iron over the concluding stages. \ number of two-year-olds and novices were given barrier practice from the sevenfurlong post on the course proper. In the first lot to go out, Golden Bonnet was the smartest to begin, but she was pulled up alter going a short distance.. Water Hound led Worton to the half-mile in ..Rs. In tlie second division, Digger Jim began best, .nit ChorJdinston ran past him to lead to tno visaing* horses Golden Sheila. Foxmond and Foxtoon performed steady tasks on tho sand.
