OLD BOYS' DAY
; GRAMMAR SCHOOL EVENT PORTRAIT OF FORMER HEAD An impressive/tribute to the memory of the late Mr. H. J. D. Mahon, headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School from 1928 to 1935, was paid at the annual parents and old boys' day at the school yesterday, when the president of the Old Boys' Association, Mr. T. C. AVebb, presented to the school on behalf of the old boys a large photograph of its former headmaster. The ceremony took place in the school assembly hall, -which was filled -with boys arid visitors. Mr. Mahon took an honoured place among the distinguished headmasters to whom the school could point with pride, said Mr. Webb. His work lived oii in the record of the school and the achievements of its scholars. He mentioned the success of another old boy, Mr. M. W. Speight, who had recently been selected as one of this year's Rhodes Scholars. A full programme illustrating the life of the school was arranged for yesterday's gathering,, which, gained a special interest from the fact that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the school. Cricket and tennis matches were played, and a demonstration of massed.drill was given bv the boys. Other events included a gymnastic display, an exhibition of the treatment of accident victims by the 'ambulance section, and shooting at the rifle range. The senior boys of the school were tbo guests of the association in the evening, when a musical programme was presented. Representative caps were also awarded to members of the school first fifteen.
