FAMILY CHRONICLE

DOUBTS AND MISGIVINGS Up to tlie death of Gordon Chattan at a point two-thirds of the way through, "Let Him Die" by E. H. Clements, is certainly an effective family chronicle. The violent death of this blackmailer returning from the past to ensnare his grown-up children, rob his friends, and generally make himself hated, turns the latter part of Mr. Clement's story into a mere guessing competition. None the less there will be much sympathy for the bachelor guardian of the Chattans, Graham Howard, who is entrusted to look after these children and their affairs. The fact that the guardian himself is suspected by the police shows the doubts aud misgivings. "Lei Him Die," b,v E. H. Clements. (Hoddcr and Stoufrhton.)
