CENTENNIAL OF POET MEMORIAL EVENING The fortnightly social of the Yorkshire Society, he}d this week, took the form of a John Hartley Memorial Night, to mark the centennial of the birth of the Yorkshire poet and author, whoso writings liavo done much to keep alive the Yorkshire dialect. The president, Mr. H. G. Staley, gave a short address on the writer and his works, making special mention of tho still famous "Clock Almanack," of which he was the originator more than 70 years ago. Special interest was given to the occasion by the presence of tho late Mr. Hartley's daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Quentin H. Moore and her husband, who are now resident in Auckland.

A sketch, "Spring Fashions," was given in the Yorkshire dialect by Mrs. H. Stewart, Mrs. A. Leach and Mrs. F. W. Clements. Cards and dancing were also enjoyed, Messrs. R. Banks and H. Caton being in charge of these. Prizes wero presented by Mrs. H. Caton as follows:—Cards, Mrs. J. Corness and Mr. W. A. Ward, jun.; Monte Carlo, Mrs. A. H. Varian and Mr. D. Ashworth; lucky number, Mrs. A. Riley.
