FANCY DRESS PARTY

COLOURFUL FUNCTION GRAFTON PUPILS' EFFORT PRESENTATION TO TEACHER With the twofold purpose of augmenting the school funds and of enabling the parents to meet together socially, the annual fancy dress party of tho Grafton School was held in the Orange Coronation Hall yesterday afternoon and again last night. The infants up to Standard II- wero at tho afternoon party and those from Standards 111, to VI. were present in the evening, after which a dance was held for the public until midnight. Elves and fairies, bushrangers and cowboys, Russians, Chinese and Mexicans were to be seen at the hall at both the parties when the children, in their merry masquerade, spent a thoroughly happy and carefree time. Recitations. dances, songs and playettes by the children were thoroughly enjoyed by the parents, who attended in large numbers, while outstanding items wero rendered by the percussion bands of primers 1., H., IH. and IV. Dances by individual pupils wore presented by the older children in the evening, in addition to several class singing items. These numbers had been assisted by Mr. I. N. Menzies, third-year student from the Auckland Teachers' Training College and music specialist, who is attached to the Grafton School staff for a year. The afternoon function was organised by Miss 0. M. Cowley, infant mistress, assisted by Miss D. Whiting and Mr. R Bean, and in the evening Mr. A. E. Manning supervised arrangements, assisted by other members of the staff. The instruments for tho percussion band were loaned by Mr. R. Howie, of the Teachers' Training College, and Madame Smith assisted in training tho pupils. The presentation of a manicure set and crystal powder bowl was made to Miss L. D. Flavcll, who, after 14 years with the Grafton School, has recently been transferred to Point Chevalier. Mr. W. Nelson, chairman of the school committee, and the headmaster, Mr. H. P. Andrew, referred to Miss Flavell's valuable services to the school, after which Valda Bennett, head girl prefect, handed the gifts to tho recipient. They were presented by the parents and school committee.
