SOLDIERS' UNIFORMS

Sir, —Tn last Thursday's Herald it was reported that the soldiers in training at the Hopuhopu camp were obliged to walk about minus their trousers because their one and only pair of pants had become wet through by the heavy rain. This is really a disgraceful and distressing state of affairs and one that in fairness to the men should be remedied immediately by the Defence Department. It is not so long ago that the Hon. P. Eraser stated that New Zealand was ready for any emergency, yet its forces are 7iot even ready for a wet day. Surely someone has blundered.

A New Zealander born and bred, I served four years overseas with our forces in the Great War. I was proud to be a member of that gallant body of men, whose fighting qualities were recognised as being of the highest. If the men now in camp are to maintain the high traditions of the "Silent Division" they should at least be given the necessary clothes to do it in. EX-Coup., 25/562.
