TAXIS AND CARRIERS

TRANSPORT LICENSING IMMEDIATE APPLICATION MISAPPREHENSION CORRECTED [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] "WELLINGTON, Thursday The fact that the amending legislation which extended the licensing provisions of the Transport Act to taxis, town carriers and ancillary users became effective on September 22 was emphasised to-day by the Minister of Transport, the Hon. P. Semple. He said that there seemed to be some doubt as to when the legislation came into effect. "My attention has been drawn to reports that have appeared in certain newspapers stating that this extension of the licensing system does not become effective until June 1, 1940, and I wish to impress on all concerned that these reports are entirely incorrect." the Minister said. "The amending legislation became effective on September 22 and applications for licences under the Transport Act should be lodged immediately by town carriers, taxi operators and those ancillary users who use trucks weighing more than two tons laden weight between places where there is a route which includes ;50 miles of Government railwav.

"The operators concerned have already had ample time in which to lodge their applications, and the licensing authorities are now arranging to deal with the applications already lodged " Mr. Semple added. He said that operators who did not lodge their applications forthwith might find that their services as carriers or taxi proprietors might be prejudiced.
