Shares are now quoted "ex dividend" 011 tho first day after that 011 which transfer books close for the payment of the dividend, whereas previously ex dividend quotation was given on the day of payment, which is usually sometime later. In the present case the Colonial Sugar Company lias closed its books preparatory to the payment of an interim dividend, hut has not yet announced the amount. Such a position was anticipated by the Stock Exchange Association of "New Zealand when it emphasised the necessity, under the new method, of secretaries and managers of companies whose shares are listed 011 New Zealand I exchanges advising the amount of dividends before the closing of transfer hooks.
