CITRUS MARKETING
Si r; —The account of the recent mooting of the Citrus Growers' Association is "certainly illuminating. It was mentioned there, inter alia, that the return to the grower per bushel case of canned lemons was six shillings and sixpence. This amount I am inclined to believe leaves but a small margin of profit. If we go on the assumption that cases of such lemons will average 301b. in weight and will each contain about 150 lemons, the return per lemon to the grower is a shade over a halfpenny each. Recently lemons have been sold in the King Country for threepence each. I am well aware that lemons are not good keepers, and that the retailer is entitled to a margin on account of ,depreciation, but I would be greatly interested to know how the staggering profit of 400-450 per cent is split up between tho wholesale merchant and the retailor.
