MR, D. J. McGOWAN'S DEATH KEEN INTEREST IN INDUSTRY BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONS ■ A prominent figure in the New Zealand dairy industry for many years Mr. Daniel Joseph McGowan died yesterday at his residence', 13 Claude Road, Epsom, following a long illness.;,. Mr. McGowan was a director of J. B. MacEwan and Company, Limited, and" ch airman of directors ,of MacEwan's 1 Machinery, Limited. ' Mr. McGowan was born at Invercargill in 1868, being a'son of the lateMr. and Mrs. Darnel McGowan, who arrived at Bluff from Scotland in 1863. He was educated, A at Mataura and early in his career became manager of the Sefton Dairy Company. He* later transferred to a similar position with the Inglewood Dairy Company.' In 1900 he joined the Department of Agriculture as a produce grader and dairy instructor and was appointed Dairy Commissioner in 1903. , ... - Mr. McGowan left the Department of Agriculture in 1904- to join the firm of J. B. MacEwan and Company, Lim-" ited. He was appointed to take charge of the company's Auckland interests ' and remained actively engaged in this ; position until he became ill over t. year ago.

Everything connected witlj,the dairy industry received Mr. McGowkrYkeen interest. Until a short time ago, ie had lieid the position ,of treasurer,to the New Zealand Friesian Association from September, 1927. He was a vice-pre-sident of the association from 1932 on-' ward and was president in 1938. Mr. McGowan founded and -built up the outstanding herd of over.6oo peSigree Friesians owned by the Piri Land Company. On many occasions he judged at shows in the Auckland district. , >

In 1892 Mr. McGowan married Miss Rosina Shirley, a daughter of another pioneering family. He is survived by his wife, one daughter and three 6011s.
