POLICE OFFICER RETIRING INSPECTOR J. POWELL [by telkg ha tut —owx correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday After 36 years' service in the New Zealand Police Force, following fiv<» .years in the Royal Irish Constabulary, Inspector J. Powell, of the New Plymouth police district, will retire at the end of next month. Mr. Powell joined the Royal Irish Constabulary almost 41 years ago and, after his training period, was. posted to the constabulary reserve, a force held m readiness to deal with rioting in any part of Ireland. He joined in Dublin and was in the force to the time of leaving for New Zealand. He had not been in the Dominion long when lie joined the New Zealand Police Force, and lie served at Invercargill, Wangamii and Napier, where ha, was promoted to the rank of senior-sergeant From Napier. Mr. Powell went to Auckland and later to Whangarei, and from there was transferred to Christchurch. On his promotion to the rank of inspector he was transferred to the, charge of the New Plymouth district, where he has been for the past five yearg, .
