ASSAULT IN CITY

VICTIM IN DOORWAY ASSAILANTS DISAPPEAR ACCOUNT BY PASSER BY A man, whose name is thought to be Penberthy, aged about 25, was found unconscious and bleeding in a Darby Street, City, shop doorway shortly before 10 o'clock last night. A middle-aged man who had been working late was crossing Elliott Street when he saw three young men .bending over something in a doorway in Darby Street. One said, according to him, "Leave him there; he's bound to get 'pinched.' " They then turned the corner and were not seen again. The man was taken by St. John ambulance to the Auckland Hospital. When the passer by went over to the Darby Street shop lie saw a young, well-built man lying face downward in the doorway, his face and head covered with blood, his head hanging over the stone step and resting on the pave ment. He was only partly conscious, and seemed incapable of speaking coherently. His appearance suggested he had been the victim of an assault. The police and an ambulance were called. Although the man was dressed in civilian clothing, his pockets held some papers which suggested he was engaged as an aircraftsman at the Hobsonville Air Base. The hospital reported ..at midnight that lie was suffering from concussion •and head injuries and that his .condition was fairly serious.
