TURF IN SYDNEY

GOOD HORSES PREPARE HIGH CASTE'S PROGRESS TEL ASUR MAKES APPEAL SPEAR CHIEF SHAPES WELL "£fboji our own cokhespox'dext] SYDNEY, Aug 14 Actual racing at Rosebcry last Saturday was overshadowed by gallops between races of class horses from the stables of G. Price and'J. T. Jamieson. Pripe sent out Gold Rod, Adios and Spear Chief to ,work over five furlongs with the colours up and all three not only galloped impressively, but looked |in splendid condition. Gold Rod was going easily at the end of the work in 1.4 and Adios also shaped well. Spear Chief, who lost about four lengths at the jump-off, reduced his leeway to a length. He is a high-quality horse and probably will bo tho best from tho stable and, nevt to Ajax. the best weight-for-age horse of tho season. High Caste's appearance surprised most people, who had not seen him since the autumn, when brought out to gallop with Malagigi and Respirator. High Caste has lost his gross appearance of. last season and will be one of the best developed and outstanding horses of the year. Ho led Malagigi and Respirator over live furlongs in 1.3}, conceding weight to both and running the last two in 255. From what has been seen of the three-year-olds in Sydney so far, High Casto stands out very prominently. Malagigi has also thrived ftnd should be a much better horse than he was last autumn. Gallop by Reading Beading, carrying D. Munro, galloped half a mile in 52}s. Compared with High Caste, he lacked substance and appealed more as a speedy sprinter than a Derby colt. However, Reading is likely-to develop a little and will not be out of place in the classic races. The Sydney Cup and St. Leger winner Mosaic was also on the course for a Walk round. He is going 011 satisfactorily, and, although lie lias to carry big weights after his autumn successes, he might bo one of the successful horses of the spring. His lessee-trainer, J. H. Abbs,, also has a promising two-year-old by Harinero out of La Boniform.

From a racing angle at Roscbery, Tel Asur and, to a lessor degree, Dashing Cavalier, made the , strongest appeal. Tel Asur carried topwoight in the Three-year-old Handicap, six furlongs, and finished most impressively to win in a way which "suggested that he will live up to his two-year-old promise. Unfortunately for his trainer, the former crack jockey, J. Munro, Tel Asur. being a gekling, is not eligible for the classic races, but Munro has high hopes of winning a good handicap.

Caulfield Gup Prospect The Epsom Handicap will be attempted first, but Munro has higher hopes of winnin gtlie Caulfield Cup. Tel Asur was kept up to his work on Saturday bv the much more seasoned Hole In One, who, strangely enough, is one of J. E. Pike's-candidates. G. Price supplied the ; third placegetter Valmiki, an improving Harinero colt, while Beau Mari, after rearing at the barrier and losing ground, finished a fair sixth. Dashing Cavalier scored in the second division,; but his task was made easier 011 account of Padua, the runner-up, going wide 011 the turn. Probably, however/Dashing Cavalier would have won I'in any case, and is worthy of being included in the Derby field.

.- Grand Boy followed up a mid-week success at Ascot by loading all the way and winning a division of the welter sprint. He is a smart but unsound gelding, who is now being mentioned as an Epsom Handicap possibility. The main feature of the event on Saturday was Young Crusader's second placing, indicating again that good handicap horses can run creditably on the big Rosebery course in sprint events in the spring.

AWAPUNI'S BEST YEAR WINNINGS TOTALLED £40,647 Awapuni had its best year as a training centre las.t season, the total winnings, £40,647 10s. representing an increase of more than £13,000 over the previous best season in 1937-38. Wilson, nine wins and 12 places, aggregating £3060. LINES OF GOLD SALUTE DAM'S UNLUCKY CAREER Gold Salute, who looks like developing into a good three-year-old, is out of the Paper Money maro .Frenzied Finance, whoso stud career has been a series of misfortunes. Her first foal was Miladi, by Weathervano, "and then four successive foals died. The next two were Warden's Gift, a filly, and Gold Saluto, both bv Lord Warden, and the next, foal, by Nightmarcli, also died. Frenzied Finance was a very speedy mare when racing, and she has bequeathed a good measure of her pace to Gold Salute, who also looks as if he will run on. 1c Is understood that no will be taken to Australia for tho spring meetings. On looks ho will not be out of place in any classic field. MOON KAY PRESENTED SECOND HORSE FOR DUKE In addition to Dhoti, who is understood to have been a gift: from the Aga Khan, His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent will also bo represented on tho 1 turf in Australia by Moon Ray. A ihree-year-okl to English time, Moon ; Ray has been raced by Prince Aly ! Khan, son of the Aga Khan. i Moon Rav, judging by his record, is i a smart galloper. Ho won the Yarmouth i Hastings Maiden Handicap, a straight , mile, in 1.35, beating the previous best | time of the course for the distance by ■( two seconds. Another mile event at Haydock Park lio won easing up by four lengths. Ho has won threo other c races this season and is to leave Eng- f land shortly. .

. Moon Ray's pedigree has associations with the Australian turf. Ho is a brown gelding by Sandwich, winner of the St. Lcger, from Nan. by-Taeger from Alma, by Spearmint from Mo.vglare, by Flying Foxi Mo.vglare was' related to many other notable mares, including Electra, winner of the One Thousand Guineas, through whom there is a relationship with the imported sires Salmagundi and The Buzzard.
