PRISON FOR MOTORIST
TERM OF SIX MONTHS negligence causing death NO LICENCE FOR 10 YEARS [by telegraph—press association] INVERCARGILL, Monday "There are your interests and the public interest to consider, and the public interest is paramount," said Mr. Justice Smith, in sentencing a man who pleaded guilty to negligent driving causing death. "The sentence must be one that will act as a deterrent and show clearly that the Courts will not tolerate conduct which leads to the slaughter of citizens. "On the charge of negligently driving a motor vehicle causing death you will be sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour, and for failing to stop afterUho accident you will be sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour, the sentences to be concurrent. Your licence will bo suspended and you will bo prohibited from driving for 10 years."
The accused was Charles Archibald Rige'cy, aged 26, who pleaded guilty in the lower Court to a chargo of negligent driving on August 5, thereby causing the death of Arthur Sydney Harper, also to failing to stop after an accident involving injury.
