MANUREWA AFFAIRS
RATES SAME AS LAST YEAR BETTER TELEPHONE SERVICE Estimates of revenue and expenditure based cn the same rates as last year, 3Jd in the pound on the capital value of the borough, were adopted at a meeting of the Manurewa Borough Council. The schedule showed that the general rates were estimated to produce £3072 and the special rates £3589,. other revenue being anticipated to yield £1537. The water account was estimated to produce £750, the interest on the loan being shown at £993. Advice was received that iu accordance with the petition recently presented a continuous telephone exchange service had been authorised. The service hitherto has been limited daily to the hours between 6 a.m. and midnight and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays. It was stated that the new service would be commenced as soon as staffing arrangements were completed. It was reported that good progress was being made with the construction of the new municipal chambers and the renovations at the Public Hall, and that the premises would be available for occupation at an early date. Suggestions for the control of school children at the school pedestrian crossing submitted by the foreman and adopted by the school authorities were approved. .
