WATER MAIN CRACKS

EFFECTS OF SULPHUR DAMAGE AT ROTORUA . [by telegraph—OWN* correspondent] ROTORUA, Friday What threatened to be a serious dislocation of the Rotorua -water supply was averted yesterday morning when an attendant on his way to the Ward Baths at about 5 a.m. discovered a serious break in the 6in. water main just inside the main entrance to the Government Grounds from Hinemoa Street. Water had accumulated in considerable quantities in front of the Ward Bath buildings and the office of the Department of Internal Affairs. The attendant quickly informed the water supply department of the Tourist Department, and a gang of men soon repaired the damage. . V When the pipe was excavated it was found that a crack about 12in. long and din. wide had occurred in tho main. It is considered that the break was caused by the fact that at 4 a.m., when the water pressure was exceptionally high, reaching 1201b. to tho square inch, the booster pump came into operation and found a fault in tho main. This particular area is highly thermal and the 'effects of sulphur upon the pipe had obviously weakened it.
