81 YEARS OF AGE
EARLY WAIKATO RESIDENT [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday To travel to New Zealand on the same ship as Captain Steele and members of the Fourth Waikato militia was the experience of Mr. PatrickKelly Carthy, of Coates Street, Hamilton East, who will celebrate his Slst birthday to-morrow. Mr. Carthy, who was born in Sydney, came to New Zealand with his father in 1864. His father had previously seen fighting with the Imperial Forces in the Bay of Islands, and, when Captain Steele organised his force, he decided to accomjpanv them. Mr. Carthy's family lived for some time in a tea-tree shack. Rations for adults and children were served out each day by the military authorities on the bank of the Waikato River, where Memorial Park now stands. After leaving Hamilton, Mr. Carthy lived for 30 years at Paeroa, where ho was engaged in a carrying business. He has three sons and five daughters living. There are three grandchildren.
