ACRES OF WHITEBAIT
SOUTH ISLAND SHOALS ENCOUNTER OFF SHORE COASTAL MARINER'S REPORT [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] GREYMOUTH, Monday Huge shoals of whitebait were seen from the motor-ship Gael during a trip from Hokitika to Jackson's Bay last week. Captain Trediga, master of the Gael, said the ship passed through acres of young whitebait. There was no mistaking the fish, and they were little over one inch long. The biggest shoals were passed off Ruatapu, about two and a-half miles off the coast. They were travelling toward the shoro in great masses and appeared to be everywhere. All members of the crew were emphatic as to the identity of the fish. • This report has been confirmed by experienced west coast fishermen, who state that the whitebait season may bo earlier than usual this year. The recent mild weather is advanced as a reason for this, although it is not unusual for fair supplies to be secured in July. The presence of large shoals indicates that tho season will probably bo a good one.
