FIFTY YEARS AGO
DEFENCE OF NEW ZEALAND The strength of New Zealand's defence forces was considered to bo very satisfactory fifty years ago, according to a military expert, .MajorGeneral T. ]3lnnd Strange, who was then visiting Auckland for the purpose of demonstrating the newly-in-vented Maxim gun. The following is an extract from tho views expressed by Majqr-GoiieraJ in an interview published in tho New Zealand Herald of July 17, 1889: — "Although your fortifications are 1 am informed, equal to anything in the world, still they might be turned. The strength of a chain is that of its weakest link, and a landing might be effected in some unprotected place. Now, if Tour cavalry was armed with the Maxim gun, in the event of an enemv attempting a landing, they could meet them. I have seen your New Zealand cavalry and can say that tliev can ride as well as any in the world, and 1 am told they can shoot."
