PAST SEASON REVIEWED LOSS ON YEAR'S WORKING The report to be presented at the annual meeting of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association on Thursday week states that, with the exception of a loss on the Windmill Road courts, the expenses remained practically the same as those of the previous year, but a decreased profit on the Auckland championships. due to wet weather on the final day. and vcrv little.profit from exhibition matches accounted for the loss on the year's working. A substantial amount has, however, been written off for depreciation. Once again, a substantial loss was made on the Domain courts, but. contrary to previous vcars the Windmill Road courts also showed iv substantial loss. Due to unfavourable weather in November. December and January, usually the most profitable months for these courts', tho takings for the season dropped the equivalent of the loss made. During the season various improvements to the surroundings of the courts at Stanley Street were carried out, and the courts at the back of the ropo works were relaid. ihis work will be appreciated by the players next season. The season was outstanding for the interest taken by players in the game, evidence of this being that every tournament created a record for entries. Tho association succssfully defended a challenge from, tho Waikato Association for the Wilding Shield, _but was Inter defeated by Canterbury by , gaiiies to 5 The season compared unfavourably \uth previous years in tho number cfcxhibitions by overseas players, iho Australian Davis Cup team played on their return from America but the weather was unfavourable and a small profit resulted A promise was received from the present Australian team to (jive an exhibition on their return in lit (In interest was shown in the two senior* ladder competitions. A Junior ladder was started, and it is hoped (hat more enthusiasm will be taken in this competition. For the first time, the grass and hard-court, competitions were played separately. lue arrangement worked very satisfactorily, and it is pleasing to record an increase in the number of teams entered..The thanks of he association arc due to the inter-club committee for its excellent work. An innovation during the season was the champion of champions tournament for both ladies and men players in the hard-court division. Tho appreciation of the association is extended to tho l-arnicrs Trading Company. Limited, and Mr, C. Johns for tho donation of cups for these aro extended to A. Burns and B. Broun, who were members of the rvew Zealand junior team which visited Australia. It Is pieasing to record that at the annual meeting of the Now Zealand Association in Wellington last August, Mr. P. Harrison, former president of tho Auckland Association, was appointed a life member of tho Dominion body.
