EXCITED CROWD

WRESTLING SPECTACLE

CONTEST AT TOWN HALL COX DEFEATS BLOMFIELD DISQUALIFICATION OF LOSER A wrestling contest at the Town Hall on Saturday night between Lofty Blomficld, of Auckland. TOst. 81b., and King Kong Cox, of America, 17st.. ended in a win for the latter, Blomfield being disqualified in the seventh round for punching. Prior to that each man had obtained a fall. Cox led the way with a fall in the second round with a body press following a succession of forearm jolts in the region of the kidneys. Blomfield evened the falls in the fifth round by means of a step-over toehold. The match drew a capacity house and the rough methods employed, combined with a liberal amount of clowning, had the spectators wildly excited. Throughout the bout Cox did everything he could to provoke the onlookers, the referee and his opponent. He succeeded in all respects, as, after being jolted hard on the kidneys, Blomfield complained three times to the referee in the seventh round. However, Mr. J. McLean, the official in charge, did not deem it necessary to intervene, and the Aueklander, thoroughly nettled, unloosened a couple of punches which sent Cox to the floor alongside the ropes, and ho was immediately disqualified. Incensed at Decision Blomficld's supporters, of whom there was an overwhelming majority, were incensed at the decision, and hooted the referee and Cox for some time, while Blomfield was loudly cheered as he left the ring, more especially as he had offered a handshake which was refused by his opponent. From the time he entered the ring the American put himself oflside, with the patrons. When sent to his corner before the first gong to have oil wiped off his shoulders he displayed resentment by throwing down the towel in a disgusted manner. Cox was warned several times in each round for such illegalities as hair-pulling. biting, punching and using his knees, but he went on unperturbed. Whenever he was in difficulties with any particular hold, Cox just grasped his opponent's hair and compelled a release, and at other times lie used similar methods to take the Aueklander otf his balance for the purpose of applying a hold. At the end of every round the American created diversion hv filling his month with water and Mowing it up in the air, in order to give himself a miniature shower-bath, finishing off by pouring the . contents of the bottle over his head and shoulders. There was laughter and jeering when Cox —apparently with the idea of assisting to revive Blomfield as the latter lay on the mat after being felled in the second round —walked to the centre of the ring and sprinkled water on the Aucklander's face and also blew some on him. Further amusement, accompanied by cheering. was caused bv Blomfield sprinkling water on Cox when he gained his fall in the fifth rouijd. The Preliminaries A bright exhibition was given hv the two Auckland professionals. Rod Douglas, "Fist. 81b., and Bill McTvor. l.'ist. 21b. Douglas won with a Boston crab submission fall in the fourth round. The pair worked at a fast pace throughout and displayed a good knowledge of holds. Mr. J. McLeaH was referee. The amateur bouts resulted as follows: —B. Sigley, Sst. 81b., beat G. Shaw. Sst. 91b., on points. This was a very even and scientific exhibition. R. Huline. list. 21b., beat J. Svekenhnm. list. 61b., on points. Mr, F. Murphy was referee and Messrs. C. Browne and G. Heakl were the judges.
