FIFTY YEARS AGO
CONTROL IN AFRICA A hint that the Anglo-German agreement with regard to their partition of spheres of influence in Africa was unfavourable to Britain was given in the press 50 years ago. The following is an extract from the Xf.w Zealand Herald of June 24, 1889. "Truth says it is leaking out that Lord Salisbury's agreement with Germany regarding the occupation of Africa was an act of folly. This opinion is based on- disclosures made by the German press in consequence of a proposal from the British Trading Company to extend its sphere of operations in Africa. The papers, indicated are exceedingly angry at the proposal and declare that the proposed extension of operations is a violation of the treaty, by which Great Britain refrains from acquiring any dominion in est Africa west of the 20th degree of longitude or north of the 22nd degree or latitude. This practically closes Africa to British enterprise."
