Seedling Fruit Trees

Seedling applo trees are really a waste of time and space in many gardens. It is far better to purchase a tree of a known and approved variety. There is always the odd chance, of course, that a seedling apple may be good, but in the majority of cases they are not worth growing. Where these seedling trees are growing, the better plan would be to head them back to stumps this winter, then graft over in spring with a good variety. For those with sufficient experience to undertake the work, quicker results will be obtained by using tho stub or porcupine grafting method. .Tn any case scions should bo collected during the coming pruning season, tied into bundles, and half buried in a shady spot until required. Branches ono inch in diameter will take a singlo scion, those larger, two or three.
