LITERARY CURIOSITY
TIBET FROM THE INSIDE What might be life on another planet is described in " Mipam," a Tibetan novel written by the Lama Yongdcn, and said to be the first romance to be published in a Western language by a Tibetan. The story tells of a child who is from his birth, believed to be tho reincarnation of a Buddhist saint, and, therefore, destined for a momentous career. After many adventures in Tibet and in India, ■where he encounters, but does not surrender to Christianity, Mipam falls in love. When later he accepts the leadership of a great monastery, his beloved becomes a nun, and it is in further reincarnations that they bopo once more to be united. In an interesting foreword, the tama refers, mentioning no names, to novels which have claimed to describe Tibet and the customs of its inhabitants, novels in which ho has found matter for no little surprise, hilarity, and indignation. In the present work, the Lama Yongden offers to those interested in Tibet a more faithful and authentic description of his pcoplo and their ways.
