FRUIT AND PRODUCE

TIIE CITY MARKETS HEAVY VEGETABLE SUPPLIES MOST LINES EASIER Hothouse tomatoes attracted a fair inquiry at the City Markets yesterday, but there was little competition for the outdoor varieties, the same trends being operative in the apple and pear sales. A quantity of poor quality hothouse grapes was not sought and made only fair prices. Rain and recent mild weather in the producing areas resulted in a fairly heavy offering of vegetables, and the market had an easing tendency. Potatoes made good prices, but heavy entries of lettuce ami celery.sold cheaply. First grade hen eggs fell Id a dozen. WINTER FEED POSITION IMPROVEMENT IN GISBORNE PASTURES MAINTAIN GROWTH \ ___ [BY TET.EGRATH —OWN* connKsrovnF.NT] GISBORXE. Friday The feed shortage in the Gisborne district is not being felt as keenly as was anticipated, as the result of the mild conditions being experienced this winter. Excellent growth for this time of the year has been experienced in pastures throughout the district and even the severe conditions last week do not appear to have affected the position a gre.lt deal, although much care will have to .be exorcised because the worst month or six weeks of the season have yet to come. In the meantime farmers are buying hay and other fodder only for immediate requirements. Hay is being sold at 6s a hale! As a result of the improved conditions in the district it lias been possible for a few Gisborne farmers to dispose of some of their mangolds for shipment to Auckland. Small shipments have gone forward at £2 10s a ton, f.0.b., Gisborne, hut at that price not much further business is expected. Pumpkins, also, have been sent out. of the district, regular shipments having been made to southern ports over the past five or six weeks. The present nominal values are £7 10s a ton.
